New Tyne: proposal for closure to be opposed

West Sussex County Council’s proposal for closure of New Tyne residential care home for elderly people with dementia is opposed by the UNISON West Sussex branch.

Branch Secretary Dan Sartin has already given media interviews to BBC TV South Today and South East Today.

The branch has issued a report which examines the business from the Council and includes the views of our members at New Tyne. In summary, UNISON believes:

  1. The business case is insufficient and incomplete and cannot justify closure.
  2. The Council is open to legal challenge if it proceeds.
  3. Closure will cause the Council considerable political and reputational damage.
  4. Closure is the wrong decision and should be rejected.

UNISON is calling instead for:

  • A complete pause on progress to close New Tyne;
  • For New Tyne to be included in arrangements for public consultation being organised for five other residential establishments, and:
  • For reappraisal of the business case and completion of the Review of options for New Tyne following this public consultation.

Please join us on the steps of County Hall at 10.00am on Wednesday 17 September where UNISON members will meet prior to Health & Adult Social Care Scrutiny (HASC) Committee which starts at 10.30am.
