At 4.15pm on Friday 19 September, UKIP leader Nicholas Tenconi and other members of the far right plan to march from Chichester Market to the Park Hotel, targeting the asylum seekers living there – the vast majority of whom are women and children.
In response, Stand Up To Racism and local community groups are organising a Unity Rally at Chichester Cross, 4:15 p.m.. This gathering will be a celebration of Chichester’s spirit of inclusion and kindness. While others choose division, the Unity Rally will show that the local community embraces diversity and welcomes refugees.
This summer, anti-racists have already outnumbered and even prevented Tenconi’s marches in Glasgow, Bristol, Southampton, and Liverpool. Now it’s Chichester’s turn to show that his hateful views are not welcome.
Members of the public, including UNISON members, are invited by Chichester and Bognor Stand Up To Racism to come together to defend our community, support the families inside the hotel, and show that compassion and solidarity are stronger than division and fear.
The UNISON West Sussex branch is affiliated to Stand Up To Racism and UNISON supports their work nationally.
Let’s make it clear that Tenconi and the far right are the minority in Chichester too.
