UNISON was formed in 1993 when three public sector trade unions merged:
- National and Local Government Officers Association (NALGO)
- National Union of Public Employees (NUPE)
- Confederation of Health Service Employees (COHSE)
UNISON has grown to 1.3 million members since it was formed, and also has 170,000 retired members.
